There’s No Such Thing as Bad Weather, Just Bad Gear

Let’s be honest. We know it’s coming. Every single year. Winter in Wisconsin is not a surprise.

Yet somehow, when that first bitter wind hits, it’s easy to start skipping your walks or runs. You tell yourself, “I’ll just wait until it’s nicer out.” Next thing you know, it’s April and you’re starting from scratch.

Look, I’m not saying you need to be out in a blizzard or minus thirty windchill. But most winter days? Totally doable with the right mindset and the right gear.

This is where the classic phrase kicks in: there’s no such thing as bad weather, only being underdressed.

If walking or running outside helps you clear your head, stay active, or just get some time away from your desk, don’t toss it out just because it’s cold. You don’t need to hibernate your habits. You just need to dress smarter.

So let’s keep it simple. Here are your five winter walking and running essentials. These are the things I personally use and recommend to clients (yes, they are affiliate links, no, you don’t get charged more) who want to stay active outdoors without freezing their butts off.

1. Socks that Don’t Suck
Cold toes mean a quick quit. You want wool blend socks, not cotton. Wool stays warm even if it gets a little damp, and it helps prevent blisters and frostbite. Look for brands like Smartwool or Darn Tough.

2. Fleece-lined Pants or Thermal Tights
Forget regular leggings. You need a thermal or fleece-lined option that blocks wind but still moves with you. Bonus points if they’re water-resistant. I got mine at Costco, but you can also get them here. Ladies HERE.

3. A Real Hat (Not Just a Hoodie)
Your mom was right. You lose a lot of heat through your head (especially bald guys like me!). Grab a lightweight, insulated beanie that covers your ears and still fits under a hoodie or jacket if needed. Lots of fun colors to pick from too!

4. Gloves You Can Actually Move In
You want that sweet spot between too bulky to function and too thin to matter. Look for thermal running gloves or lightweight ski gloves. You want grip, wind protection, and moisture resistance.

5. A Solid Base Layer Shirt
Start with a moisture-wicking base like Merino wool or a synthetic blend. LADIES HERE. MEN HERE. Then layer a quarter-zip or hoodie over it. This traps heat but lets you unzip if you get warm mid-walk or run.

Winter is going to do what winter does. But that doesn’t mean your habits have to freeze up too.

Layer up, gear up, and get out there.

You’ll feel better. You’ll stay on track. And come spring, you’ll be way ahead of the game. Speaking of staying on track, I got you…
