Unicorn Frappegate and Why I Don’t Tell People What to Eat

I’m pretty sure if Starbucks made a s*** flavored drink and called it something magical people would still rush out to buy it…

I wasn’t surprised by the rush and hype, but what I was surprised by was the reactions from health industry people, and the back and forth social media drama that some want to get wrapped up in.

From the “Food Babe” telling you that every ingredient in the pink shake will give you cancer, to the “If It Fits Your Macros” crowd defending it to the death and calling out people for unicorn shaming…it seemed like a bloodbath.

All I posted about it was a simple comparison to a quarter pounder at McDonalds, with the caption: FYI

My point was not to SHAME people into not buying it, nor to shake my finger at people and tell them that they would probably turn pink and grow a horn on their heads if they drank one.

The point was to just show a comparison. Take it for what it’s worth.

A lot of people in the health/fitness/nutrition industry get wrapped up in counting macros, calories, supplements, jah jah jah jah…and often times forget that most people don’t really care about the gritty sciencey details, nor understand it – and thats okay.

I don’t claim to understand a word my engineer friends tell me when they explain circuits, resistors and transistors etc.

The number of people commenting on this single Instagram post was more than I have ever had. They tagged their friends, they commented “OMG I had no idea”, etc.

That was the point – to bring awareness of “look, this drink has some hefty calories in it” Enjoy it if you want, probably not frequently, but if you really want it, it’s not going to ruin your life.

I posted a similar picture, comparing wine and ice cream the same way:

Again, it’s a “look at what these two things have in common” – and that is all.

The bigger picture here is we are all adults.

We all have the power to make informed decisions about what we eat, how much we eat, and when we eat it. No one is forcing us to go to Starbucks, nor should anyone ban us from going if we want.

But what we do need to work on is just knowing – you know, the whole knowledge is power kind of thing.

I’m not in the business of telling people what they can and cannot eat.

We all know what foods we should eat more of, and what foods we should eat less of. My job is helping people find the magical point at which they can have their cake and eat it too (sometimes) – and get the results they want.

If you have no idea where to start, then that’s what I’m here for – let me know how I can help you.
